Dental Crowns

Porcelain crowns, also known as caps, are made to encase the entire visible portion of a tooth in order to act as the tooth’s new outer surface.  A dental crown is typically used when a tooth is broken or decayed to such an extent that fillings aren’t able to repair it. As a protective shell around the damaged or decayed tooth, the crown is able to strengthen it, as well as enhance the tooth’s esthetic appearance. For broken teeth, a crown helps to restore the tooth to its original shape. The most common crowns are made of a mixture of porcelain in order to give them a more natural look and feel.

What to expect:

Typically, you’ll need to schedule two office appointments with our dentist office in Austin TX. Upon your first visit, Dentist will begin reshaping the tooth and taking impressions to create the final crown. Typically, a portion of your tooth will have to be removed in order for the crown to fit properly. Once it has been reshaped, Dentist will use a special material to create an impression of it. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where a customized crown will be made for you. Before you leave, you’ll receive a temporary crown in order to cover your tooth in between visits.

Once you return for your second appointment, Dentist will have received the permanent crown from the laboratory. Before cementing the permanent crown in place, we will ensure that it fits comfortably and correctly matches the color of your teeth.
